Post Why do we need mycast.orb.com?
I don't know why the previous thread was deleted but the question remains.

If mycast should ever go down, we would be stuck. It honestly seems to serve no purpose other than a useless middle-man and just slows down the whole connection process.

Can't the orb servers just stream their own web server?

Would love to get an aswer to this question from Orb support.. Maybe we could get the web code and run them locally inside of our own networks? THat would be awesome..

I've been working on a "hack" that will bypass it and go through a local web server. I have been able to rather easily bypass the proxy that is required, however developing a web interface will require some work. It would make things *much* easier if I had somebody who could develop a web interface for me. Please e-mail me at goldstmarc[at]gmail.com if you are interested. I don't expect this post to last long before it is deleted so yeah.

Hi

Is it possible to run MyCast locally ?

I don't use Orb for streaming out of the house just use it on the local LAN, just concerned that if the MyCast website is down then my media sharing system goes with it.

Post Re: Why do we need mycast.orb.com?
Unsderstood -- about two months ago mycast was down.. and I couldn't stream because of mycast.. when I could theoretically I do not even need it..

But there is no way that I know of as of now.. I even wrote an API to bypass mycast, but it still has to authenticate the users against ORB's central database of username/passwords.. .. Also this was doesn't require that you know your external WAN IP address.. In addition.. You would still need to provide an interface to browse files.. Like mycast does.. Which then would require a webserver application somewhere as well.. (maybe orb could distribute the mycast interface for users to host locally as well).. So if you want security, authentication, and ease of setup, this is probably the best way

That said, the app could store username/passowrd for each individual user on each individual machine.. but that individual is now responsible for securing their username/password database files rather than ORB.. But it is possible if the app would do it, given that you know your external WAN IP address and could provide an interface to browse files .. It would require the community wanting it to function as such, because it would probably require a significant amount of work ( i would be willing to help ).

To conclude it would be cool if there was the capability to authenticate and browse files locally without going to ORB servers (personally, I would use it), but that would need to be an install option or something because not all of ORB users care about this technicality and do not want to spend the extra effort to get it set up as such. Further some may have a difficult time just getting all the info for it (WAN IP address, and providing a hosting location for a browsing interface like Mycast)

So count my 1 vote for a custom install option to authenticate locally (bypass orb servers all together) - but by default it should be the current normal configuration.

Add my vote for a local system as well, thats 2, anyone else want to add their vote ??

Its shouldn't be difficult for the developers to release a version that would run locally.

Can I ask that an admin / developer give us an answer to this question ?

I also vote for this, I have already requested it, but I doubt it will ever happen.

To be honest with modern Web 2.0 I don't really get why the page should be at Orb's host with placeholders for our media, instead of exactly the opposite (I for one don't feel the urge to contrast their need to push additional content etc. - after all something must keep the product free).

Post Re: Why do we need mycast.orb.com?
I guess i have to add my 2 cents.
I like orb. It's free, they haven't asked me to pay for anything.
orb is for those of us that like to go to someone else's place and
have all my movies... music... photos or whatever to view... listen.
It's an internet thing.
It's simple, only a web browser to access and it does everything in the
background, it senses the computer's modem speed... whether it's broadband
or dial up and tries it's best to output the file at the proper speed without
too many hiccups ... and I think it does a fair job. Could be better
but... I'm not complaining .... it's free.
If you want to stream things on a LAN... local area network.....
why don't you purchase your own server and software... set it up...
if you can figure it out.... and there you'll have it... no need for mycast.orb.com
I'm sure most everyone here is referring to a lan that is inside their home.
why are ya'll still the the stone age for that? Forget the wires... go wireless.
Seems to me that everyone that wants an answer to this question is too
cheap or too dumb to set up streaming video and audio inside you home.
There... I said it... I know ya'll are going to be mad at me, but I think the
people at orb that keep this server running for everyone to use do a great
job.
so... why do you want to bad mouth something that's free.
lots of my friends have enjoyed viewing my 500+ movies (converted to avi/divx format)
from their own computers and most of them have their computers connected to
their big screen tv's... they think it's amazing.... ME TOO!
so.... that's why we need .... mycast.orb.com....
otherwise.... shell out the bucks to create your own streaming network...
on your own private LAN.
:D

Hey mrsparksz.. I actually have a GREAT solution inside the LAN it is outside the LAN that is the problem.. The issue is mycast goes down.. Unless you have a stream already going.. You won't be able to start a new one until orb is back.. I would like to see you start a stream when their servers are down..

I HAVE NEVER BAD MOUTHED ORB.. I LOVE THIS APPLICATION.. I try to make good contributions to this forum.. I am just requesting functionality that I and other Orbers would like to see implemented into the product..

BTW - I am not too cheap or dumb to set somethin up inside the LAN.. I have a great solution inside the LAN.. Again this is for not logging into mycast in order to get content.. Has nothing to do with LAN/WAN .. Ohh yeah.. even on LAN you still have to authenticate to mycast..

That said..
I was working on my api so i only had to log into the api if mycast was down.. but i discovered there is no point as
mycast.orb.com and api.orb.com are the same IP addresses.. Thus if one is down.. they both are down.. they are the same server from what I can tell..

Orb support - is this true.. Or is there some sort of apache name based virtual hosting that redirects to different backend servers based on the URL used?
