Post New file browser add-on! (included with Orb since v 671)
April 21 update: the file browser is included by default in the Orb PC release as of version 1.01.0671

FileBrowser is an Orb add-on that gives you access to ALL the files on your PC (and networked drives). You can also stream directly from your PC! If you have Google Desktop Search installed on your PC this is even better :-)

Let us know if you find any problems.
Thanks!

Works fine (even with Safari on a Mac client), but I'd like to see support for Windows Desktop Search... it will be the designated file search system in Vista and is already offered for XP.

Any word yet on when this might work with PDAs? I love Orb, but I would like to simplify things without having to have Avvenu and Orb running both at the same time.

Always on the go, so it's great to have my computer files always at my finger tips!

I have a bug... the File Browser does not refresh well when a file is uploaded. Even when logging off and back on, or using a different client PC, the browser doesn't realize that a file has been uploaded. I know the file is uploaded since I can see it on the host PC.

However, when I don't have direct access to the host PC, not having some visual confirmation that the file was uploaded can be concerning, and leaves me unable to trust the feature.

The quick workaround would probably be a text confirmation that the file was uploaded properly... however long-term it would be best if the index was refreshed to show the file in the browser.

Post File Explorer can't see Network Drivers
Everything was working just fine on the day I installed the file explorer add-on but now I can't see my network drives. I get the following error:

Error loading /orb/web_index.jsp?category=web&function=index&orbServer=AddOn+FileBrowser&orbPageName=tree.xml &orbFullScreen=true&path=%3A%3A%7B208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D%7D (???)

Hi folks!
I just installed FileExplorer, WOW! I tried to search my network but I got an error message myself, don't remember the message. BUT when you just enter the networks device NAME (\\SERVER) in the FileExplorer address bar you will make your way. That is good enough for me. Off course you don't get to see which devices are in your network. But if you know the name and they are always connected and running it is a nice and actually quick way of accessing.

I hope I could help you!

Now, as this seems to be the official FileExplorer thread I wanna mention a few things I came across when using it:
1) The network problem as discussed above
2.0) I couldn't find any readme for that AddOn.
2.1) So I hd to figure out myself that there is no way that you can DELETE data, right? just want to make sure. I love the idea that my files are read-only
2.2) I even tried to OVERWRITE a file. From the process of uploading it felt and looked as if the upload just finished successfully. But the file was still the old one. So I guess overwriting is not possible as well. Would be nice to have a little message telling you, that it's not possible. At least I do know now.

Am I right with my assumptions (2.0, 2.1 and 2.2)? Just wan't to check.

Have a nice day! Orb and FileExplorer rock! Now I only need a Subnotebook or UMPC to profit from it on the go as well.

Last question a little bit off topic (feel free to reply via PM). What hardware setup do you guys have for smooth Video streaming (a real 2,4GHZ CPU? or does a 2400+ or something similar work)?

You're correct, FileExplorer cannot delete or modify existing files.

mkztg,
if you're asking about release 671, yes it has several fixes for software tuners. (not related to FileExplorer though...)

I've found a bug, on PDAs the ability to save files is hindered when doing a Google Desktop Search... more times than not the save button does not work and you cannot view images. The workaround is to navigate to the folder after finding the path, but that takes a lot longer on a PDA than a PC...

Also, when downloading files, the names are incorrect when saved on a PDA. They contain the entire folder path leading to the file as a part of the filename.

Post "Sharing" Files
I'd really like the option to "share" files in certain directories like I can with my photos, etc.

Is this on the drawing board?

Ups, sorry!

LOL!
I must have had a major brain disfunction then. Never write a post when you are lacking sleep.

To cut it short: Is there any word about the improvements of the latest version, 1.01.0673 from 27th of April 2006? The off. changelog link does not work.

Again, I am sorry for my previous no brainer post ;)

Best regards

The link to Web and PC releases notes are at the bottom of the Home page as always, here are the PC release notes: http://support.orb.com/support/pc_release_notes.jsp

Nothing changed in the File Explorer recently. I don't know what you mean by "The off. changelog link does not work".
