Post Improving Video quality - reducing pixelization - on Xbox 36
There are two hidden parameters to play with the quality of the video on the Xbox 360.

The maximum output resolution that is loosely automatically based on your CPU.
1 - Launch regedit (Ctrl+R then type regedit)
2 - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Orb Networks\Orb\Config
3 - Edit orb.streaming.performanceIndex
4 - Set the value to any number, knowing that 10 is usually what a single core P4 2.8GHz is able to output at 90% CPU.

For instance an Intel Core 2 Duo should have a performanceIndex around 18.

The speed of the stream can be raised if you have a cabled ethernet or fast Wifi:
1 - Launch regedit (Ctrl+R then type regedit)
2 - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Orb Networks\Orb\DMS
3 - Right click -> New -> DWORD
4 - Call it WMSpeed
4 - Set the value in DECIMAL to the kbps you want, the default is 1200, for cabled internet set it to 6000 maximum.
=> Your videos should launch faster and have less compression artifacts.

For the changes to take effect, you don't need to stop/start orb, just "rebrowse" in the folder you want to play, which means go up one folder and go back down to it.

Hope this helps!

My performanceindex is set to 58.285636, this seems to conflict with your post. Should I be concerned?

Same here - what can we do ? I'm using a Core2Duo E6400 overclocked to 2x 3.5GHz

This post and this process exactly solved my problem. My performance index was pre-set to 1.4 and my bandwidth was also very low. I have Fios, a normal 100 MBS ethernet, and an opteron 180 dual core.

I was getting really poor, unwatchably poor video. I did a search on this board for poor video quality and I found this gem of advice, buried in an old post.

I have fixed these settings in Regedit, and lo and behold, the video looks great.

The normal regedit advice applies, of course don't mess with the registry if you don't know what you are doing, and if you are not prepared to re-install windows at a moments notice should the power go out.

Given that, I now need to figure out what the optimal settings really are, and this takes some experimenting. I would advise the Orb engineers to make these settings available in the GUI, so that the bug that caused this problem won't wreck the performance. Also, it will be interesting to see how people do with fine tuning the two items.

Thank you,

John

Hi Manu,

I've tried these updates without much success. It seems that a number of users are having the same problem as me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The basic issue is as follows:
ORB on Desktop PC (3.0Ghz, 2 Gigs Ram, 1TB HD).
Streaming to XBOX
Music is fine
Pictures are fine
Video is fine for about 10 minutes...then gets pixilated and the audio slows down to a creepy level. Eventually the video just freezes all together. Video is XVID, but this also happens with DivX as well. Any help or assisstance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm having the exact same issue, see my spec's in Sig. Doing the tweak above pushed the 'functional' time to about 15mins, it did help a bit. However things still corrupt w/ first some pixelation and video/audio stutters which get worse, then audio sync goes, then video freezes all after about the 10-12min mark until its completely frozen at about 15 mins.

Steps I've personally tried up to posting this:
- Registry Fix listed at top of this thread
- Changing permissions of all affected files for orb and media files
- Disabled all power mgmt settings to keep system always 100% on.
- Uninstall re-install of Orb to a non-system created section of the hdd (c:\stuff\orb)
- Modified permissions on 'stuff' to everyone 'full control'
- Antivirus set to ignore the 'stuff' folder and all contents.
- Moved several differently encoded video file into stuff folder, checked permissions.
- Checked Event Viewer for any events correlating to time of 'crash' to see if system task is interceding w/ transcoding to cause issue (none found)
- Defrag'd HDD

Post registry fix not working: please recommend other settings
i ahve the same problem - changed the 2 registry settings (local LAN is 100mbps, so set the kbps to 100000, and have tuned the performanceindex all the way to 2500).

AMD dual core 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, xbox360... vista x64 ultimate (no problems with this OS btw..)

pixelation begins everytime on the same scene in the movie, approx 5 mins in...

even tried rebooting the pc in between registry changes (and i have tried many, default start was 19.265158).

OK guys.. I have been researching this for a while now.. and i don't see a fix.. I looks to me that there may be a issue with memory in the ORB code for handling streaming media to consoles.. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=21967&p=61286&hilit=xbox#p61286.. I have given up on getting this to work as it looks like it can't be fixed without changing source code to fix a possible memory leak in the application... I have now got everything I want streaming to the xbox via media PLayer 11.. I know it sucks, but I am happy I get content to my xbox with fast forward and rewind and resume with no problems at all

This is how I got it to work.. (Some videos will still have to be converted.. IE MKV files and VOB file from DVD's.. but most content works .. I use a converter app called Super - IT ROCKS... haven't encountered a video file i can't convert yet..)

1) Install windows Media PLayer 11 and enable sharing.. It's in Options->Library->Sharing.. You will have to enable sharing to the XBOX (make sure the xbox is on and connected to the network)

2) Install the Community Codec Pack.. (lots of codecs that will be registered to the OS ... http://cccp-project.net/)

3) Add the content you want the xbox to see to the media player library..

4) for video xbox can't play use super to convert to Xvid AVI files.. and your golden..

If you want to run the content over a CIFS share you can follow these steps to allow windows media player to stream from network attached files.. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... spx#q20_17
